New Directors/New Films Festival Lineup Unveiled by Film at Lincoln Center and Museum Of Modern Art This April

Film at Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art are thrilled to unveil the 53rd New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) event, set to run from April 3 to April 14, 2024. This renowned festival, which has been a staple for over five decades, honors emerging filmmakers whose innovative works redefine cinema’s boundaries, offering a glimpse into the industry’s future. The 2024 edition will feature a lineup of 25 feature films and 10 short films, including a world debut, 13 first showings in North America, five U.S. debuts, and 16 introductions to New York audiences.

The festival will commence on April 3 with the New York debut of “A Different Man” by Aaron Schimberg, featuring Sebastian Stan, who clinched the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the Berlin Film Festival for his role as Edward, an ambitious actor overcoming a severe facial disfigurement. The closing highlight on April 14 will be “Stress Positions” by Theda Hammel, a dynamic and bewildering queer comedy capturing Brooklyn’s essence in the summer of 2020. The selection spans over 30 countries, including award-winning films from prestigious festivals like Berlin, Cannes, Locarno, Sarajevo, and Sundance.

ND/NF has historically been the launchpad for global filmmaking talent, introducing New York to now-celebrated directors such as Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Spike Lee, among others. This tradition of spotlighting the avant-garde of international cinema continues, fostering connections between New York’s discerning audience and the next wave of storytelling visionaries.

Dan Sullivan, a programmer at Film at Lincoln Center and co-chair for the 2024 ND/NF, expressed enthusiasm for showcasing groundbreaking work from local talents, highlighting the festival’s core mission of presenting fresh cinematic voices. “A Different Man” and “Stress Positions” both reflect the festival’s legacy of embracing bold and unconventional narratives.

La Frances Hui, the Curator at MoMA’s Department of Film and 2024 ND/NF co-chair, praised this year’s assortment for its bold exploration of film language, celebrating the spectrum of human emotion and experience through inventive storytelling. The selection committee, comprised of members from both institutions, curated a diverse and compelling slate for this year’s festival.

Ticket sales for the public open on March 7, with early access for members of Film at Lincoln Center and MoMA starting March 5.
