Even though it’s technically summer, wind and rain are forecast to head to the Bay Area Tuesday, thanks to an “unusual” storm system hovering over Southern California, weather experts said.
The storm system is expected to move eastward over the next 24 hours while the moisture from it “shower activities,” to weather experts moves from east to west.
This makes it a bit of an anomaly.
Matt Mehle, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office, said in his statement to a news agency that the direction is a little bit unusual.
But as far as rainfall amounts, it’s been relatively light.”
However, earlier this morning, thunderstorms brewed over coastal waters west of San Francisco, he said, and meteorologists recorded at least 150 lightning strikes off the coast in the North bay.
Mehle said that Monterey and San Benito County have received the most rainfall thus far — by contrast, there’s just a slight chance showers will douse the Bay Area.
According to the Los Angeles NWS office, thunderstorms and showers are expected to impact areas like San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara counties through Wednesday. In those regions, wind gusts could reach as high as 50 mph, and .25 to .50 inches of rain per hour are forecast to fall.
For now, there’s a 20% probability of rain in San Francisco Tuesday, and most of the showers will likely subside by late afternoon, Mehle said.
