Tokyo rings in 2024 with a dazzling New Year’s Eve celebration, featuring lights, music, and special performances at Tomin Hiroba.
To ring in 2024 and showcase the allure of Tokyo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government hosted a vibrant New Year’s Eve celebration, “HAPPY NEW YEAR TOKYO”, at Tomin Hiroba, within the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. This festive gathering attracted around 650 attendees, including families, individuals, and international visitors.
The celebration commenced with a stunning light-mapping display, highlighting Tokyo’s iconic landmarks and the beauty of its seasons. The evening was further enlivened by performances from the renowned singer-songwriter Pikotaro and beloved Sanrio figures, including Hello Kitty. Their appearances on stage contributed to an unforgettable experience. As the event drew to a close, Governor Koike and the attendees released lanterns into the night sky, symbolizing hopes for the New Year and Tokyo’s future, culminating in a spectacular countdown to 2024.
Featured on the stage were Pikotaro, Sanrio characters, and Governor Koike. Pikotaro graced the event with a special rendition of his hit song “PPAP,” tailored for the occasion. He explained that the song’s lyrics were crafted to include “YO” and “TOK,” signifying “you” and the ticking of a clock, respectively, thus embedding the theme of “Forward Tokyo” into the song.
Next, Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters captivated the audience with a charming performance, accompanied by a captivating projection mapping show.
Governor Koike then stepped onto the stage, sharing an inspiring message on one of the lanterns: “Each of us makes your Tokyo shine.” She emphasized the dynamic and ever-evolving charm of Tokyo, fuelled by its people’s radiance. The event concluded with a mesmerizing projection mapping themed around Tokyo’s four seasons, displayed on a large curved wall. As the countdown visuals appeared, the sky was illuminated by lanterns bearing the crowd’s wishes, creating a magical atmosphere.
