Visitor destinations enforce stringent policies to curb overtourism

Tourist destinations worldwide, from Venice to a town near Mount Fuji, are taking significant steps to address the challenges of overtourism. In Fujikawaguchiko, a popular Instagram spot known for its view of Mount Fuji, a large mesh barrier has been erected to control the influx of tourists. Locals had complained about overcrowding, traffic issues, and disruptions caused by the surge of visitors.

The barrier was set up following complaints from residents about the negative impact of tourism on the area. Tourists were accused of leaving behind trash, ignoring traffic regulations, and causing general disruptions. The specific spot near a Lawson convenience store, seen as “very Japanese,” has attracted numerous visitors looking to capture the perfect shot of Mount Fuji.

Huw Owen, cofounder of TravelLocal, a tailor-made holiday platform, noted that social media has significantly contributed to this trend of overtourism. He pointed out that tourists often flock to specific locations for social media photos, sometimes acting irresponsibly and without respect for local communities and the environment.

Fujikawaguchiko is not alone in facing these challenges. Venice has introduced a controversial tourist fee to mitigate the effects of overtourism. The Italian city launched a trial 5 euro fee (approximately $5.40) for day-trippers during its peak travel season, applicable on 29 peak days between April and July. Locals and overnight hotel guests are exempt from the fee but must book online, which has caused some discontent.

Meanwhile, Lauterbrunnen, a scenic mountain town in the Swiss Alps, is also grappling with the impact of tourism. The town, with a population of just 2,400, faces issues such as congested roads, crowded public transport, higher rents, and increased pollution. To address these problems, the mayor is considering introducing a fee of between 5 and 10 Swiss Francs ($5.50 to $11) for visitors arriving by car. Exceptions would be made for guests with hotel bookings or those arriving by public transport.

These measures highlight the growing need for tourist destinations to find a balance between welcoming visitors and preserving the quality of life for residents. As more places implement strategies to manage overtourism, travelers must plan their itineraries carefully and be mindful of local regulations and community impacts.
