Unforgettable Havasu Falls Trip: Tips and Learning Experiences
Embarking on a journey to Havasu Falls in the heart of the Havasupai Indian Reservation is a dream for many adventure seekers. With its breathtaking turquoise waters, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and stunning canyon landscapes, this hidden gem in Arizona promises an unforgettable experience. To make the most of your trip to Havasu Falls, here are a few essential tips and learning experiences to consider. You can also refer Havasu Falls travel guide here!
- You pass Havasu falls right before the campground- no technical climbing involved. Mooney is just past the end of the campground and you can get a nice view from the top. We easily could’ve checked this out once we got to camp day 1 but didn’t realize it was right there!
- There is only one frybread stand and limited supply. Go right when they open (roughly noon) if you really want to try it. Some people waited 2+ hrs I’m told when they went later. Very filling and hits the spot when you’re out camping. Not a big deal but I was just under the impression things were pretty abundant before I got there.
- We aimed to hike to confluence on day 2 but despite going in one direction down the canyon we hit some side trails and got lost (you can’t get too lost in a canyon but still) We had clocked 6 mi on my friend’s garmin by beaver falls… saw another sign we still had 6 more to confluence and decided against it. I am not even sure where to go from beaver falls. Look into that more before you trek out. I’m glad we skipped it and spent time enjoying Beaver and Mooney.
- Bring water shoes with a strong sole if you plan on swimming. Absolutely essential. I had tevas. They did me well on the beaver falls hike with river crossings although should’ve broken them in more beforehand as I got some blisters.
- Waterproof phone case was also essential. If you take photos of this beautiful nature it will come in handy walking around the water. I slipped a few times and completely submerged the phone which was not the plan but was a good test on function of the case. Amazon description below.
- I don’t think I suffered any mosquito bites. Flies were the biggest problem. But I was relieved I didn’t see any horse flies as I have a bigger fear of them.
- The ascent was actually scarier than the descent of Mooney falls. I have quite a fear of heights but just focus on your footing and grip (the chains and ladders feel very sturdy) and you’ll be fine. It’s pretty fun in hindsight.
Enjoy and soak it all in! Such an incredible experience!
A trip to Havasu Falls is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you with lasting memories. By planning ahead, respecting the land and culture, embracing the journey, exploring beyond the iconic falls, and immersing yourself in the nighttime magic, you’ll make the most of this extraordinary adventure. Prepare to be awe-struck by the natural beauty, embrace the challenges, and open your heart to the wonders of Havasu Falls.
