TTW Editor in Chief Mr. Anup Kumar Keshan said: “Airbnb is making the 2024 Paris Olympics unforgettable for travelers worldwide. They’ve expanded their listings, offering everything from budget homestays to luxury apartments. New platform features ensure easy booking and enhanced safety, while local experiences let visitors explore Paris like locals, including the Eiffel Tower. Airbnb’s commitment to sustainability and their support for hosts show their dedication to community and hospitality. It’s not just about finding a place to stay; it’s about making the Olympics a memorable and seamless experience for everyone.”
Statistics and Trends:
As of March 31st, nights booked during the dates of the Olympics are over five times (400%) higher than they were in the Paris region the same time a year ago. Paris, the most searched city on the platform during the event, has seen an all-time high for active listings. There’s an increase of nearly 40 percent in the Paris region compared to a year ago, as hosts prepare to welcome domestic and international travelers.
While guests from over 160 countries and regions have already booked their stays during the event, travelers coming from the US are leading Olympics-related travel, booking over 20 percent of stays in or near host cities during the Games. The big medal-winning countries of 2020 are also strongly represented in terms of the nationality of guests traveling to France during the Olympic Games: most of the 10 countries that have booked the most travel to France are among the top medal winners from Tokyo 2020. French guests are currently in third place in terms of nights booked, but domestic bookings are expected to increase closer to the event as the majority of ticket holders are French.
Growth from Asian Markets:
In terms of growth, Asian countries are leading the leaderboard: Airbnb has witnessed the highest increase in travelers coming from Mainland China, India, Hong Kong (SAR), and Japan. This is followed by Czechia, Mexico, Ireland, Brazil, Luxembourg, and Colombia.
Financial Performance:
Airbnb ended 2023 with another strong quarter. In Q4, Nights and Experiences Booked totaled 99 million, growing 12 percent year-over-year, and marking the highest fourth quarter ever. Revenue of $2.2 billion grew 17 percent year-over-year (14% ex-FX). Q4 net loss was $349 million, and excluding non-recurring tax items, Adjusted Net Income was $489 million—our most profitable fourth quarter. Adjusted EBITDA of $738 million represented a 33 percent Adjusted EBITDA Margin, up 6 percentage points from the year prior.
Making Hosting Mainstream:
We’re focused on making hosting just as popular as traveling on Airbnb, and we believe our approach is working. In Q4, our Host community surpassed 5 million Hosts around the globe. Active listings exceeded 7.7 million by the end of 2023, increasing 18% year-over-year with sustained double-digit supply growth across all regions. In 2023 alone, Hosts earned more than $57 billion. In 2024, we’ll continue raising awareness around hosting and improving the overall host experience.
Q4 revenue was $2.2 billion, up 17% year-over-year. Revenue increased to $2.2 billion in Q4 2023 from $1.9 billion in Q4 2022, driven by solid growth in Nights and Experiences Booked, a modest increase in Average Daily Rate (“ADR”), and an FX tailwind.
Expanded Listings:
In anticipation of the influx, Airbnb has introduced several innovative measures to accommodate the increased demand. They have expanded their listings, ensuring a diverse range of options from budget-friendly stays to luxurious accommodations. Airbnb is ready to welcome all travelers from across the globe with homestays, apartments, and various lodging options during the event. This expansion is crucial to providing travelers with more choices, catering to various preferences and budgets.
Enhanced platform features:
Furthermore, Airbnb is enhancing its platform with new features designed to make booking and staying in Paris more convenient. These include a streamlined booking process, improved customer support, and enhanced safety measures. Hosts are also receiving special training to provide exceptional hospitality, ensuring every guest feels at home.
Local Experiences:
One of the standout features is the introduction of local experiences curated by Parisian hosts. These experiences offer travelers a unique opportunity to explore the city through the eyes of locals, from hidden gems and culinary tours to exclusive events and activities related to the Olympics. This immersive approach promises to make the trip unforgettable, blending the excitement of the games with the rich cultural tapestry of Paris.
Sustainable Tourism:
Airbnb is also collaborating with local authorities to support sustainable tourism. This includes promoting eco-friendly accommodations and encouraging travelers to explore beyond the main tourist hubs. By doing so, Airbnb aims to reduce the environmental impact and spread the benefits of tourism more evenly across the city.
Visa For Paris Olympics:
The Paris electronic visa (eVisa) system, introduced in anticipation of the Paris Olympics 2024, simplifies the visa application process for international visitors. This digital platform allows travelers to apply online, eliminating the need for physical paperwork or embassy visits. France, as the first EU country to fully implement such a system, will issue around 70,000 digital visas integrated into accreditation cards for athletes, journalists, and other attendees. This initiative aligns with the EU’s broader plans for Schengen visa digitalization by 2026, making entry smoother and more secure for all visitors
