The Minnesota Twins, along with Treasure Island Resort & Casino and the Prairie Island Indian Community, have unveiled a Franklin baseball glove that celebrates Native American Heritage and the unifying power of baseball in Minnesota, known as Mni Šota Makoce. Designed collaboratively by Treasure Island’s creative team and the Prairie Island Indian Community, these gloves will be gifted to the first 5,000 fans attending the Native American Heritage Night at Target Field. This event is slated for Saturday, August 31, when the Twins face the Toronto Blue Jays. Additionally, another 1,000 gloves will be distributed to local youth through a program organized by the Minnesota Twins Community Fund, in partnership with Treasure Island and the Prairie Island Indian Community.
“Dakota heritage is our state’s heritage, and we are proud to celebrate the Prairie Island Indian Community and help spread the joy of baseball through these amazing gloves,” said Kristin Rortvedt, Executive Director of the Minnesota Twins Community Fund. “We are grateful to our partners at Treasure Island Resort & Casino, the Prairie Island Indian Community and Franklin for creating this special representation of the Dakota Oyate and other indigenous people. We’re excited to host Native American Heritage Night at Target Field on August 31, and we look forward to seeing these custom gloves on ballfields throughout the region!”
“Our partnership with the Minnesota Twins creates a perfect opportunity to celebrate and share our Dakota heritage and culture with our neighbors,” said Grant Johnson, Prairie Island Indian Community Tribal Council President. “Sports are a great unifier and events like Native American Heritage Night and the custom-glove giveaway help us connect and build a stronger community.”
Tickets for the Native American Heritage Night on August 31 are available online at twins.com/tickets, by phone at 1-800-33-TWINS, or in person at the Target Field ticket office. The game is scheduled to start at 6:10 p.m., with gates opening at 4:00 p.m.
The glove features several culturally significant elements:
- Mni Šota Makoce: The name, which means “the land where the waters reflect the skies,” is prominently displayed in the style of the “Minnesota” lettering on the Twins’ road grey and alternate navy jerseys.
- Eagle: An eagle, a sacred symbol in Dakota culture for carrying prayers to the Creator, is also featured on the glove.
- Star Quilt: The palm of the glove displays a design reminiscent of a star quilt, which is a symbol of esteem and resilience in Tribal nations, representing the morning star and the community’s adaptability.
- Colors: The colors of the glove—black, red, yellow, and white—represent the four cardinal directions, each significant to the Dakota Oyate.
- Logos: The glove includes both the Prairie Island Indian Community seal and the Twins’ “TC” mark, symbolizing a blend of cultural heritage and team spirit.
