China’s summer holiday season may have come to an end, but “Emperor Kangxi’s Grand Ceremony” has wrapped up with impressive success. This large-scale live performance, set beneath the starry skies and against the backdrop of stunning natural landscapes, masterfully integrates royal culture into its storytelling. Now in its 13th season, the show has been a consistent favorite among tourists from all corners of the country. Every performance has drawn packed audiences, making it one of the most dazzling attractions in Chengde City’s cultural tourism scene this summer.
By August 30th, the 13th season of “Emperor Kangxi’s Grand Ceremony” had completed 201 performances, welcoming over 500,000 visitors. Throughout the scorching summer, the show broke new records, staging three performances on six consecutive days, spanning 18 days of triple shows. On average, it drew more than 9,000 visitors per day, bringing increased foot traffic to Chengde’s commercial streets.
One of the major beneficiaries of this tourism surge is Dingsheng Yuanbao Street, a district that has transformed from a slow-growing area to a cultural hotspot. Blending Qing Dynasty architectural styles with modern leisure, the district offers tourists an immersive cultural shopping experience. Over the past three years, it has introduced 40% first-to-city brands, becoming a symbol of Chengde’s new leisure lifestyle. The district’s outstanding performance has earned it multiple awards, including “The First Batch of National Nighttime Cultural and Tourism Consumption Clusters,” “National AAAA Tourist Attraction,” and “Provincial-level Demonstration Commercial Street.”
This year, Dingsheng Yuanbao Street has further enhanced its appeal with new attractions like street murals, children’s play areas, traditional Chinese markets, and diverse activities for all ages. These developments complement the live-action performance of “Emperor Kangxi’s Grand Ceremony,” offering tourists a well-rounded experience with dining, shopping, sightseeing, and entertainment.
As September approaches, “Emperor Kangxi’s Grand Ceremony” will introduce citizen tickets as a token of appreciation to local residents. Along with ongoing events and uniquely crafted streetscapes, the show continues to enrich visitors’ experiences, contributing to Chengde’s growth as a culturally vibrant and tourism-driven city.
