Turespaña, the Spanish national tourism agency, has released the Summer Trend Reports for the top 25 international markets contributing to tourism in Spain. These reports include comprehensive data and analyses that project the travel trends expected for these markets in summer 2024.
Significantly, Spain has observed an unprecedented 49.8% increase in air travel connectivity with China for the summer season of 2024, marking the highest growth rate compared to other competing tourist destinations.
The Ministry of Industry, facilitated by Turespaña, announced today the availability of these reports, which have been diligently prepared by its extensive network of tourism offices across the globe. Each report provides a detailed examination of the main economic indicators, sociopolitical elements, recent shifts in tourism demand, and predictive trends for each market, making them invaluable for industry stakeholders planning for the upcoming high season.
In the opinion of the Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, the trends for the summer “make us optimistic, without falling into complacency.” “After an extraordinary winter season, which is not a low season, we hope to complete a second half of the year that equals and even exceeds that of 2023,” the minister assessed.
Overall, Spain is poised to remain a preferred destination for international tourists during the summer of 2024, especially among the primary markets of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and the USA. The reports highlight Spain’s superior positioning relative to its closest competitors in these key markets.
In the United Kingdom, Spain’s largest source of tourists, there is an expected increase of more than 8% in air travel capacity for the summer months compared to the previous year. For France, Spain remains the top international vacation destination following their own country. The Turespaña report predicts a very positive summer season in terms of French tourist arrivals.
In Germany, despite the current economic downturn, the reports forecast that German nationals will continue to travel to Spain during the summer, maintaining the country as a top holiday choice.
For Italy, Spain not only continues to rank highly in terms of preference and intent to travel but also shows a significant increase in air travel capacity. The upcoming summer air links between Italy and Spain are set to grow by 13.8%, showcasing a range of enhanced connections that outpace those of its rivals, as evidenced by increased flight searches on platforms like Skyscanner and Google.
The report also touches on the U.S. market, highlighting that it is both a long-haul and highly profitable segment. In 2023 and into 2024, this market has seen a remarkable surge, with forecasts for this summer indicating increases in seat availability and flight frequency by more than 16%.
China’s tourism sector shows signs of robust recovery, driven by an increased demand for air capacity and visas, and a strong market performance in the initial months of the year. Travel from China to Spain grew by 19% in comparison to 2019, with summer 2024 expected to witness a significant 49.8% increase in air capacity, the highest among all the markets analyzed.
As May approaches, the Ministry of Industry and Tourism also released forecasts for the arrival of international tourists and their anticipated spending. Projections suggest that May will continue the strong performance seen in early 2024, with an estimated 9.49 million international tourists arriving in Spain, a 14% increase over May 2023. Furthermore, these tourists are expected to spend nearly 12 billion euros during the month, representing a 22% increase from the previous year. This positive outlook reinforces Spain’s position as a leading global tourist destination heading into the summer months.
