SECL to turn Manikpur Pokhri coal mine into an eco-tourism hotspot

The South Eastern Coalfields Ltd is an additional wing of Coal India and recently has taken a decision to set up its already closed cole mine in Manikpur Pokhri located in the Korba district of Chhattisgarh into an eco-tourism spot. On Sunday, an official of the company official said the same.

In the state of Chattisgarh, this would be the second such project. A similar mine in the adjacent Surajpur district was turned into a tourist hotspot as well.

The SECL together with the Korba Municipal Corporation will spend around Rs 11 crores to turn up Manikpur Pokhari mine into a destination of eco-tourism and by now, for this reason, the company has allocated around Rs 5.60 crore to to Korba Collector, Sanish Chandra, SECL spokesperson said the same.

One of the first mines in Korba district, mining in Manikpur Pokhri, started off in 1966 with the technical consultation of Russia. Almost24 years later, the source of groundwater was discovered during the excavation there and the water inflow was so high that it could not be drained out easily, not even the motor pumps could do something and lastly the mine had to be closed, he mentioned.

This mine is spread across an area of over 8 hectares which has taken the shape of a huge lake and now it will be converted into an eco-tourism site.
